Discover the original Amiga games that took Europe by storm, and challenge yourself in the console adventures that pushed them to the limit. This is retro action gaming at its best, complete with an incredible soundtrack by Chris Huelsbeck. David L., our Supreme Strategist of Collecting Stuff, is a huge fan, and he's here to share his insights on the game:
Q: David, what draws you to the Turrican games?
David L.: Turrican is a perfect blend of exploration, action, and challenge. It was one of the first games that really nailed the idea of massive, intricate levels combined with intense, fast-paced combat. The freedom to explore every nook and cranny, uncovering secrets, and then unleashing powerful weapons on enemies—it’s a formula that hooked me from the start.
Q: What do you think makes Turrican stand out compared to other games from that era?
David L.: Turrican stood out because it proved that European developers could create action games just as good, if not better, than the Japanese console titles of the time. It had that Metroid-like exploration combined with Contra’s firepower, all with a unique European flavor. Plus, Chris Huelsbeck’s soundtrack was phenomenal—it really added an epic feel to the game.
Q: Mega Turrican introduced some new mechanics and brought the series to a new platform. How do you feel about that entry in the series?
David L.: Mega Turrican was a fantastic evolution of the series. Bringing Turrican to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive introduced it to a whole new audience, and the addition of the grappling hook mechanic was a game-changer. It allowed for even more exploration and made the level design more dynamic. The game retained the spirit of the original while pushing the gameplay forward in meaningful ways.
Q: Chris Huelsbeck’s soundtrack is iconic. How important do you think the music is to the overall Turrican experience?
David L.: The soundtrack is absolutely integral to Turrican. Chris Huelsbeck’s compositions are legendary—they don’t just complement the game; they elevate it. The music sets the tone and keeps you immersed in the action. Even today, I find myself listening to the soundtrack outside of the game. It’s one of those rare soundtracks that stands on its own as a piece of art, and it’s a huge part of why Turrican has such a lasting legacy.
Q: Any final thoughts on why Turrican still holds a special place in your heart?
David L.: Turrican is more than just a game for me; it’s a piece of gaming history. It showed that innovation and creativity could come from anywhere, and it still inspires game developers today. Every time I play it, I’m reminded of why I fell in love with video games in the first place.
